This course is an introduction to the expansive possibilities of tapestry weaving as a visual art medium. We will explore various approaches to this versatile technique, which requires no specialized equipment. Students will discover a diverse selection of contemporary tapestry artists as inspiration. Over seven weeks, we will build portable frame looms and experiment with colour, pattern, texture, imagery, and the sculptural potential of tapestry. This course allows you to explore multiple possibilities of handling white or coloured paper by considering the creative potential of a textile approach to this material. We will study different papers and several techniques allowing us to modify their surfaces either by softening them, stiffening them or by texturing them to create volume.
