Art School in Montreal

The Visual Arts Centre is a dynamic art school in Montreal, a contemporary gallery, and an outreach art education program. We have been part of Montreal’s impressive artistic community for over 70 years.

Our art school in Montreal is the largest bilingual independent art school in Canada, with over 300 courses offered each year, with a wide variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, jewellery, ceramics, printmaking, and collage. We have almost 4,000 registrations each year, including absolute beginners, students wishing to develop a portfolio, and professional artists with a desire to hone new skills.

In our art school in Montreal, we have courses for young children (starting from 3 years of age), teenagers, and adults. In our art classes, professional contemporary artists guide students of all levels to explore, learn, and create. These teachers offer curricula and pedagogical approaches that balance technical skill with the encouragement of personal creativity. They are able to offer students significant attention, as classes are kept small, with no more than 15 students in a class. They offer accessible and high calibre art education, taught with an ethic of care and openness. We also offer online courses.

In addition to our art classes, such as drawing classes and painting classes as well as our photography classes, we offer workshops that are taught by our regular faculty and visiting artists, “technical talks” (which are talks given by Montreal-based specialists in art-related fields and businesses), and special art talks given by our teachers.

The building is easily accessible by public transit, as it is a short walk from the Vendome metro station. Within this beautiful space, we offer a creative home for so many Montrealers. We hope to see you at the Centre soon!

McClure Gallery

The Visual Arts Centre’s gallery, the McClure Gallery, is a highly sought-after contemporary art space. Each year, the gallery features approximately ten exhibitions of both emerging and established artists from Montreal, as well as elsewhere in Quebec, Canada, and abroad. The McClure Gallery aims to increase awareness of and engagement with contemporary art.

Our robust public programming, including artist and curator talks, conferences, guided tours, and workshops, helps us achieve this. Teachers in our art school often bring their students in the gallery to explore concepts and techniques related to their art classes. Importantly, students registered in the winter session of our art school are offered the opportunity to exhibit work created in their art class during the Annual Student Exhibition. This exhibition affords students an opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional gallery space and enable the Montreal community to see the creative output from our art school.

As part of our effort to offer accessible and high calibre art education, the Visual Arts Centre regularly reaches out to the broader Montreal community through our outreach programme, called ARTreach. With this programme, we offer free programming to communities of individuals dealing with difficult social and/or economic circumstances. For over twenty years, we have worked with other educational institutions, community organizations, artists, and social workers to create art classes that cater to the needs and desire of the participating groups. Through specialized art courses, ARTreach embraces art as a means of social and individual well-being.
