This course is an introduction to weaving as a form of visual art-making. To begin, you will be guided through the building and setting up (warping) of a frame loom. During the course you will produce samplers, learning various colour mixing and shape building techniques - tapestry and weft-faced pattern weaving. You will also experiment with balanced (cloth) weaving and various pile techniques. We will go through several methods of finishing your weavings and finally, display possibilities. Throughout the course you will be introduced to exciting weaving practices both historical and contemporary. For beginners.

We will explore various approaches to this weaving technique, inspired by a diverse selection of contemporary tapestry artists. Students will be guided to experiment with colour, pattern, texture, imagery, and the sculptural potential of tapestry. Throughout, you will receive individual guidance towards creating your own personal woven project. Creative finishing and display methods will also be discussed, to take your artwork all the way from idea to presentation. For all levels.

Rug-hooking is an art with traditional roots in the practice of upcycling and creative reuse. Both artistic and utilitarian, rug-hooking is an exciting way to recycle textiles and reduce our environmental impact! This course will introduce techniques to design and hook your own personal rug project. Learn to "paint" beautiful compositions by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a backing material. Students will be guided to source and prepare their own materials using unwanted clothes and fabrics. Inspired by contemporary rug artists, we will discuss themes related to sustainability, identity, and personal traditions. For all levels.

Tissage à la chaîne - Band and Tablet Weaving (Printemps/Spring 2024)

This weaving course will focus on warp-faced weaving techniques. Warp is the vertical yarn of a woven structure. You will be introduced to band weaving using a rigid heddle with backstrap as well as tablet (or card) weaving. These narrow, woven bands can be joined together to form larger wall-based works, bags or guitar straps. Finally, we will have fun experimenting with ikat and painted warp weaving. Historical and contemporary examples will be referenced throughout. This is a great course for beginners and seasoned cloth or tapestry weavers alike that requires minimal equipment and space. No previous weaving experience required.
