Originally from New Brunswick, where she studied in a B.A. program at U.N.B., Cynthia Hawkes is currently a professional jeweller and instructor. After spending many years in Toronto and New York pursuing a career as a modern dancer, she moved to Montreal, changed career direction and completed a specialized, contemporary jewellery program at the Saidye Bronfman School of Fine Arts. For the past twenty years, she has been teaching Jewellery Fundamentals and the Art of Silversmithing at the Visual Arts Center in Westmount, Quebec.
While working over these many years to perfect her craft, she has also worked extensively as a professional jewellery buyer. This has given her an expansive overview and an appreciation of many different styles of jewellery. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal and L.A. Pai Gallery in Ottawa.
Cynthia has been the director of the jewellery department at the Visual Arts Centre since April, 2022.
