Arte Povera was a conceptual artistic movement that encouraged artists to react to the values of consumerism prevalent in North America. Campers will be invited to reflect on how such concerns are still very important to many artists today. How can the experiences of life be interpreted and extended through art? We will embrace the spirit of the Arte Povera movement by infusing our work with a sense of poetry and symbolism that seeks to dissolve the barrier between art and everyday life. Campers will experiment with artistic approaches that play with the relationship between art and life, including textile art.

In conjunction with the Illirijavut Exhibition at the McClure Gallery we are offering this workshop with artists and curators Qumaq Mangiuk Iyaituk and Kathryn Delaney. True-life Inuit stories provide the occasion for an active cultural exchange, inspiring a strong sense of collaboration between participants and the Inuit artist/storyteller. Artists will be encouraged to explore different aspects of the narrative, bringing their own ideas and imagination into their visual expressions. This workshop encourages the empowerment of Inuit culture and traditional values, bringing together the Inuit oral tradition of storytelling with visual artists to create small accordion style books through the techniques of pencil/ink drawing and watercolours. The exhibition associated with this workshop shares the processes and products of a yearlong series of workshops thanks to a 2016 (Re) conciliation grant from the Canada Council for the Arts and their partners.
