McClure Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Radiators & Dunes by Sarah Rooney.

Sarah Rooney makes paintings and photographs through a process of the layering of registers. She seeks to become witness to subtle spatial conundrums, and her works present reflections on shifts in distance, immediacy, and time. Sarah Rooney’s new works leave traces of subtle boundaries between matter and materiality, form and formation. Her research reveals a layering of decisions, where nature meets construction, linking painting brushstrokes to a conceptual field. In the exhibition Radiators & Dunes, Rooney features diptychs and triptychs created in response to desert expanse, interpreted through the lens of organic fragments and residual fibre paper-pulp packaging. United by a malleable geometry, the works deal with contemporary notions of the sublime, space and scale, and the atmospheric.

The exhibition Radiators & Dunes is accompanied by a 16-page catalogue with a text by Jakub Zdebik and colour reproductions of new works by Sarah Rooney.

A Montreal-based artist, Rooney was born in South Africa and spent her formative years in Brazil. She studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, England, before obtaining a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal and an MFA from York University in Toronto. She has taught at York University, the University of Toronto, and she is currently a part-time professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa. Rooney’s paintings are included in the Canada Council Art Bank Collection, as well as in private collections in Canada, Europe, the United States, and Mexico. Sarah Rooney’s recent painting and photography projects have been presented in Impulsion de réseau, Galerie R3, (UQTR), Trois-Rivières, 2018 and in Abstract Networks at Karsh-Masson Gallery, Ottawa this summer 2019. The exhibitions were curated by Jakub Zdebik with Luce Meunier and Monica Tap. Rooney has an upcoming solo exhibition namely Malleable Geometries, Orléans Gallery (OSA), Centre des arts Shenkman, Ottawa, January 2020.
