Waiting for Spring

Virtual tour (online): Thurs. Mar. 4 at 5 pm

Online Art Hive: Sat. Mar. 27 from 10 am to 12 pm

Exhibition: Mar. 5 to 27

In her recent paintings, Judith Berry liberates landscape from its usual anchoring in gravity. Here landscape adheres to mobile forms reminiscent of figures and portraits or, at times, these objects and faces are pulled down into constituent parts of vegetal matter and manufactured forms. The forms collapse, shift, and regenerate themselves, oscillating between abstraction and representation. The artist uses paint opaquely to represent three-dimensional shapes that also appear shallow and collapsible. Her reconfigured landscapes embody precarity, both environmental and social, and contain a reflection on the natural, historical, and biographical events that shape our sense of place.

Judith Berry explores the medium of paint with moments of turmoil, humour and foreboding. She has had solo exhibitions across Canada in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa. Judith has also shown in numerous group exhibitions including exhibitions at the Musée du Québec and the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Her work is in various collections including: the City of Ottawa, the Musée du Québec and the Art Bank of the Canada Council. She has served as a jury member for the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the City of Ottawa. Judith Berry is represented by Galerie Art Mûr in Montreal. She lives and works in Montreal.
